LIBRARY DAY IN THE LIFE… ROUND 6, DAY 5

8:00

  • Ran through my Starling slides from yesterday. I’m 3 minutes over (for a 10 minute presentation), so I need to figure out what to compress.
  • Since this is such a concise presentation, I recorded my run through. I’m going to type up the bullets and attempt to memorize the talk. This is not my typical method, but with 10 minutes I think it needs to be a bit more prepackaged.
  • I found images for about a fourth of the slides.
  • Molly Keener, one of my coworkers, was featured on the WFU homepage for her involvement with Emerging Leaders!

9:00

  • Again, I have over 200 messages in my inbox. I went through the “everything else” folder in my priority inbox and got rid of about half through archiving, trashing, and quick replies

10:00

  • Met with our Assistant Director of Reference and Instruction to talk about an assessment study we want to do (which is why I had to complete IRB training yesterday)

10:30

  • Back to email, replied to about 10 most critical ones

11:15

  • Back to finding more images for the Starling presentation

12:00

  • Lunch with Leif. I’m trying to keep it from being too fun because he’s now starting to get upset when I leave. :(

1:00

  • Impromptu mentoring session

2:00

  • TLC Advisory Board meeting; I’m the representative to this University committee from our library (because of my involvement with the Teaching and Learning Center). We discussed current and upcoming issues.

3:00

  • Back to the office to type up what I remembered from the meeting, send a few emails, and start closing browser tabs.
  • Continued working on Starling slides
  • Back to around 70 emails. Hoping to get some time this weekend to work more on this…
  • And I’ll just continue working on this until I go home for the weekend.

Personal take aways for the week:

  • I’m in more impromptu meetings than scheduled ones–and I’m in a lot of scheduled ones!
  • Significantly more email comes in than I am able to respond to immediately. I don’t have solid enough blocks of time to work on it in the office and make real progress.
  • Based on this week, I think that the value I’m bringing my place of work at this moment is more in the realm of strategy, thinking about different possibilities and pitching to others, and generally brainstorming. Hopefully I’ll get more tasks done next week!
