LIBRARY DAY IN THE LIFE… ROUND 6, DAY 5

8:00

  • Ran through my Starling slides from yesterday. I’m 3 minutes over (for a 10 minute presentation), so I need to figure out what to compress.
  • Since this is such a concise presentation, I recorded my run through. I’m going to type up the bullets and attempt to memorize the talk. This is not my typical method, but with 10 minutes I think it needs to be a bit more prepackaged.
  • I found images for about a fourth of the slides.
  • Molly Keener, one of my coworkers, was featured on the WFU homepage for her involvement with Emerging Leaders!

9:00

  • Again, I have over 200 messages in my inbox. I went through the “everything else” folder in my priority inbox and got rid of about half through archiving, trashing, and quick replies

10:00

  • Met with our Assistant Director of Reference and Instruction to talk about an assessment study we want to do (which is why I had to complete IRB training yesterday)

10:30

  • Back to email, replied to about 10 most critical ones

11:15

  • Back to finding more images for the Starling presentation

12:00

  • Lunch with Leif. I’m trying to keep it from being too fun because he’s now starting to get upset when I leave. :(

1:00

  • Impromptu mentoring session

2:00

  • TLC Advisory Board meeting; I’m the representative to this University committee from our library (because of my involvement with the Teaching and Learning Center). We discussed current and upcoming issues.

3:00

  • Back to the office to type up what I remembered from the meeting, send a few emails, and start closing browser tabs.
  • Continued working on Starling slides
  • Back to around 70 emails. Hoping to get some time this weekend to work more on this…
  • And I’ll just continue working on this until I go home for the weekend.

Personal take aways for the week:

  • I’m in more impromptu meetings than scheduled ones–and I’m in a lot of scheduled ones!
  • Significantly more email comes in than I am able to respond to immediately. I don’t have solid enough blocks of time to work on it in the office and make real progress.
  • Based on this week, I think that the value I’m bringing my place of work at this moment is more in the realm of strategy, thinking about different possibilities and pitching to others, and generally brainstorming. Hopefully I’ll get more tasks done next week!

LIBRARY DAY IN THE LIFE… ROUND 6, DAY 4

I feel like this has been a particularly intense week… but actually, it’s pretty normal. :)

Today is a little different. I’d intentionally blocked off large portions of the day for some large tasks that have to happen this week. For that reason, I’m in casual attire, I broke out the reading glasses, and I have a mug of hot tea in front of me.

8:20

  • Got in a little later (20 minutes later) than I wanted due to an impromtu hour of helping Leif get back to sleep around 3am :)
  • Checked in with email, calendar, Toodledo
  • Selected 3 MITs
  • Turned on my TED Talk playlist so that I could listen to them in the background. I try to do this at least once a month so that if there’s anything particularly relevant I can work it into my LIB100 class.

8:45

  • I worked on a database project for another department that the web services librarian and I have been working on for some time. This part of the project included creating some trial data and putting it into the system to see if it would display in ways that the department would like.

9:00

  • Another meeting

10:00

  • Worked on my Thursdays at Starling presentation. My topic is the intersection of libraries, technology and teaching in today’s evolving information landscape. I’m really excited because these are presentations by faculty at the University to people at this University. The audience doesn’t come because it’s training (like I’m used to), they come because they want to see what work others at the University are doing and in the same event you hear short talks (10 minutes) from three people from wildly different backgrounds. I’m still working out my overall message….
  • Though I did check some email and had a few drop-ins

12:00

  • Lunch with John and Leif! John’s been able to make it a lot more than normal this week!

1:00

  • IRB Training; lots of Radiohead in the background

3:00

  • Faculty member stopped by. We caught up (which was nice) and made plans for wikis for his classes (which I look forward to doing). I realized I need to be more on top of email since when he walked in I wasn’t sure if I had let something slip through the cracks or not. Just how to fit it in?!
  • A few mission critical reply emails (in response to that feeling that I might have missed something)

3:15

  • Continued working on Starling presentation. I have created all the text outline slides, and now need to find appropriate images.  It’s looking like about 50 slides for the 10 minutes, but many of those are rapid fire where we’ll go through 6 in 3 or 4 seconds. I’m head down in this at this point, and I likely won’t remember to publish when done, so I’m going to go ahead and publish now. Hope the rest of your days go well!

LIBRARY DAY IN THE LIFE… ROUND 6, DAY 3

8:00

  • Got in, checked 43 folders, email, paper on desk
  • Made oatmeal & tea
  • Checked in with Toodledo again and picked out my MITs
  • Got in touch with someone on my team about getting a computer for the student worker we have starting next week
  • Wrote out thoughts on some projects to email out

9:00

  • Lots more email
  • A little more planning for the day

10:00

  • We had a welcome party for a new staff member

10:30

  • Participated in several impromptu meetings with different colleagues on different projects (both existing and possible)

12:00

  • Lunch with Leif and John!
  • On the way back, heard an interesting story on NPR about a book, Great Philosophers Who Failed at Love. Stayed in car for a few minutes to finish the story. I am the philosophy and women’s and gender studies liaison at my library, so this story was interesting to me from a few perspectives.

1:05

  • Replied to a few critical emails.
  • Grabbed another hot beverage and got to work ordering… for philosophy, women’s and gender studies, and the teaching and learning center. I’m well behind where I should be this year since I was out for three months and have been fitting the work I used to do in the evenings into the work day. I’ve blocked out Wednesday afternoons from here on out to spend more time ordering.

2:00

  • Met with someone from the Cisco side of the Fellow position; talked about educational technology at my institution, the library’s role in working with faculty on educational technology, and institutional culture.

2:30

  • Planned to meet with a colleague to talk about wikis, but he was in a meeting that was running long. I used the time to catch up a bit with reference staff (nearby) and to talk with my boss’s boss about a few projects that are coming up.
  • Huge snowflakes falling outside!!

3:00

  • Another meeting outside the library.

4:00

  • Met with the colleague to talk about wikis before a class on Friday that he’s leading. He’s a pro at all things tech, but I had been planning to do that section of the class. Another meeting got called at the same time so he’s going to cover it.

4:20

  • Met with Fellow to go over the Cisco visit today.

4:50

  • Wrapping up things  now in hopes I can get out of the building and to the daycare by just after 5:00!
