I co-chair the Distance Learning Interest Group with Karen Wetzel. LITA Discussion Groups are largely about discussion, while we do other things too. We had an agenda that had us covering topics ranging from a call for a new co-chair, our annual program, potential online courses, our blog, ways to coordinate with ACRL’s Distance Learning Section, and general discussion about issues associated with online learning.
We had 26 people in all, enough that we had to get extra chairs. Most everyone seemed to be involved and the discussion was really interesting. One point that really resonated with me was that all librarians have to think about their online learners, whether they do instruction, reference, collection management, etc. In some way or another, online students are impacted by all library roles. Another point I really liked was that Web 2.0 has encouraged librarians to be creative in their work. Even if a library doesn’t go with the flashiest, newest Web 2.0 thing, in thinking about it they have to re-evaluate their services and think about the best way to meet the needs of their users.
I pointed out several of our projects, from text message reference to the recent tutorials toolkit. I got really positive feedback on the toolkit idea, so I’m hoping it goes over as well for our students!
Finally, on a lighter note, someone pointed out Ball State’s MySpace page, and said they had really funny tutorials there. Something I’m going to need to check out when I get home!

Hi, Kristen:
Thanks for all of the good work you are doing as co-chair of the LITA Distance Learning Interest Group.
I have the pleasure of working on the following. Would you evaluate and consider sharing this information with both LITA Distance Learning Interest Group members and others associated with distance education within your scope (either via list post or other means)? It would be excellent to have a number of research examples/best practices from the LITA membership to include in the issue. Please let me know if you have questions:
