Touchdown in Denver!

I’m in Denver, ready for another Midwinter! It’s weird, I didn’t really do too much today, but between traveling, getting settled in, and seeing a few folks, the day is already over.  (Well, except for the brave librarian souls headed to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.)

The flights were good: I got in on time and didn’t loose luggage. The shuttle went smoothly, even though I didn’t make prior reservations. (I had hoped to use public transit, but learned it would take an hour longer.) I sat next to a Mac user who was new to OSX, so I was able to share some fun pointers about iTunes, Garage Band, Spotlight, and Spaces.

Sarah and I are staying at the Curtis Hotel. It’s great fun. The alarm clock is a little Volkswagen car! I’ll try to take pictures tomorrow. For now all you need to know is that we’re staying on the 13th floor, and every time the elevator stops for us it says, “Heeeere’s Johnny!” and an image from the Shining is right outside the elevator door.

I went out to reacquaint myself with Denver–I haven’t been here since our 2003 Greyhound Bus trip–and found I remembered far more than I thought. So far the big difference is the quality of where I’m staying. Last time it was in a questionable hostel, this time it’s a fun hotel (see above). I found the Tattered Cover Bookstore and had a great noodle meal while watching the snow:

Afterwards I stopped by the LITA Happy Hour, saw a few familiar folks, and ran into Susan. We headed on out, she to dinner, and me to coffee.

Though it was still relatively early, I didn’t realize how late it had gotten for all I had left to do! So, I headed home and prepared for tomorrow’s meetings. Tomorrow is slam packed, so it was good to have some downtime.

John and I were able to coordinate getting on Google’s video chat, which was the first time either of us has really had the opportunity to play with the technology. Fun stuff…. very living-in-the-future-now. It’s so amazing to me when something that we only read about as a hypothetical in our childhood becomes something that’s approaching commonplace.

So, now I’m off to make sure my ducks are in a row for the Distance Learning Interest Group. If that interests you and you’re at ALA, we’re going to be in the Convention Center’s Korbel Ballroom 4A at 10:30 tomorrow!
