The Google Books Settlement

I am a huge fan of Google Books, and I keep my fingers crossed that they’ll stay “not evil.” As part of the emerging technology talks I give at work, I studied up on what people are currently saying about the settlement and gave a talk on the topic. I also gave a very short talk on the Life Photo archive.  When I give talks, I try to stick to images. Here’s the entire presentation.

However, that’s not too useful if you weren’t there to hear the speech component. So, I threw in a few notes slides as well in case you’re interested in the content:

I can’t say much about Google Books (haven’t really kept abrest of it lately), but I have mixed feelings about the Life Archive. I just hope they don’t rely on digitization to preserve everything. I mean, Google has some awesome search alagorithms, and lots of money to ensure everything stays well-maintained, but part of me is afraid that they are going to treat the archive as just more stuff to crawl.

Here’s to hoping that they avoid that “evil” thing you talk about. For better or worse they are the public shepherd to a cultural treasure.
