Why Professor Johnny Can’t Read

Today I hosted the ZSR Library Staff Journal Reading Group. That meant that I got to pick the article, bring in treats, and make sure we had things to talk related to the article. I chose Why Professor Johnny Can’t Read:Understanding the Net Generation’s Texts in Innovate. The article was by Mark Mabrito and Rebecca Medley. If you’d like to read the article, you can get access to it freely, but you have to create an account.

It was a good discussion, ranging from discussing whether we should have a hybrid approach or one that focuses on either traditional or emerging technology class structure, how people find information vertically (digging down through the references) or horizontally (reading, follow a link, reading, follow a link), and whether any of these traits are really “new.” We spent a while talking about how people flitted between texts before, just on paper, and how few people really like reading long texts.   Cliff notes was mentioned as an proof of point. We also talked about brain research that suggests there are physical changes to the brain, and what the use of technology might be doing to our collective minds.

Anyway, interesting discussion and great group. Have you read the article?
