First, we talked about leadership.
- Leadership as a process of influence that inspires other people to achieve results.
- To provide purpose, direction, and meaning
- Three organizational requirements: alignment with a common vision, empower those involved, and a learning, inquiry-based, and reflective culture.
- Brought up appreciative inquiry as a way to foster optimism. This was mentioned a LOT in the ACRL/LAMA Joint Virtual Institute.
- Big theme, and particularly applicable from my view: it is what you make of it. If the experience isn’t great, make it great.
- EL program has cache. Hard since we like to think about equality, but being initiatives can open doors.
- Long discussion of politics/networking, teasing out similarities and differences.
Then we talked about collaboration.
- We talked about contradictory voices, how to include people who aren’t too interested or are too interested, incorporating yourself into existing groups.
- Let as many people as possible know if you’re interested in being involved. Let people know your goals so they can know you’re interested if an opportunity arises.
Then we talked about conflict.
- Every time two or more people get together, there is a chance for conflict.
- Conflict, itself, is not positive or negative.
- Collaborative style of conflict management: give attention to both what we want to accomplish, but also the needs of others.
- Talked about owning what you say and scripting what you plan to say.
- Solution seekers not problem finders.
- Giving positive feedback as much as possible along the way so that when it’s time to give negative feedback you’ve shown that you also recognize good work and you have built trust.
- Choose where to put time and energy, some battles aren’t worth fighting.
- Talked about fine line between strategic actions and manipulative ones. Deciding question: Is this for the betterment of the library?
Finally, we talked about ethics.
- Talked about line between value and ethics.
- ALA has code of ethics, but not written values.
- Ethics: right and wrong behaviors that come from values.
We concluded with a personal follow-up, plan for development where we came up with at least one personal goal. Good morning. Now to lunch and to prepare our posters.
Ear update: Was totally congested on the plane, and the decent to Anaheim was really rough. I am still totally stopped up and have NO idea how loudly/quietly I’m speaking. Just wanted to let you know so that if we run into each other you know I’m not yelling at you on purpose.
