Notes: Progress Update: UNCG University Libraries “Library Resources” Tool

Richard Cox, Lynda Kellam

Yay! My former classmate, Lynda, is presenting!

  • Realize the big picture: the students aren’t going to come to us…. we need to go to them. And they’re not necessarily interested in us in their social space. So, they integrate into the academic environment.
  • Left nav side: a Library Resources button. Added as default to the load.
  • Shows hand selected journals and databases for the class as well as Liaison information.
  • Course specific, but can be customized on the department level, too.
  • Students don’t think about subject, they think of semester, and this addresses that.
  • Showed static webpages for subjects and course guides. They’re not moving away from that, but are thinking about rethinking the approach.
  • They talked about the programming side: .NET Framework, SOAP, Data integration, interface for librarians.
  • Front end: Blackboard, Java, Adobe Flex, JavaScript, Ajax.
  • Some misunderstanding about role for subject librarians, faculty see it as addition to library instruction, difficult to assess. Comparing to guides, apples and oranges.
  • They also have a library tab on the Blackboard main site.
  • This tab is awesome. Pulls their course list, shows all ereserves, course resources, etc tied to their record (classes, major, etc.).
  • Single search bar with catalog, journals, google scholar
  • Chat box: If liaison online you see theirs. If the liaison is offline, you see the reference chat box. If no one is online you get the generic contact information.
  • Both UNCG and Duke are doing this, but taking different approaches. Duke is going the librarian an a course builder route. UNCG is going the automated route. Duke finds course builder role valuable (you even get class email!) but they’d like to find a way to make it easier.
  • Key: have a great relationship with Blackboard Administrator!
