Notes: Inspiring Change, Leading from Within: A Case Study

  • Question w/in the organization: How do I move up within the organization? Elizabeth as a case study for this.
  • Spent a while teasing out authority, power, and influence with audience participation in the discussion.
  • Power often deals with resources, so not everyone can have that. But you can have influence without resources.
  • Wrote white QEP paper arguing that information fluency should be a core value of the university. This lead to the creation of a new team.
  • Paper came from communication across campus, work with multiple librarians within the library, acted on her commitment to fill users needs, ended up being on committees, and ended up being in the right place at the right time to write the white paper.
  • Harold Leavitt: “The organization can name any damn fool a manager. Not so with leadership.”
  • Leaders come from anywhere within an organization. See book Followership.
  • Path of a Leader by Kouzes and Posner in The Leadership Challenge: Model the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenge the Process, Enable Others to Act, Encourage the Heart.
  • Talked about salary. If you feel good about your job and what you do, you’ll think low salary comes with being a librarian. If you feel under-appreciated, you’ll feel underpaid.
  • Questions: can you influence or change direction of the org? do those you influence feel like they have influence? what barriers to you or others taking leadership roles? how can you inspire others?
  • Step outside of library… look at direction the institution should be going in.
  • Always take advantage of opportunities, even if it’s scary. This helps prepare you for leadership later.
  • Secret to life: stay in love with your work, find ways to inspire yourself, be passionate about something, share your joy.
  • Spend a lot of time at work… must make sure it’s enjoyable.
  • Very important to be as positive as possible.
  • They mentioned Appreciative Inquiry, too.

The audience for this was great. They were all over adding content to the white board! I loled several times. :)
