The Association of College and Research Libraries has sections. I’m on the Women’s Studies Section. Within this section there are several committees. I’m on the Instruction Committee.
It’s a good committee that does regular work. Sometimes I’ll work on a project and it doesn’t go much of anywhere, but that’s okay because it’s kindof the nature of these things.
Our really big project now has to do with revamping the information literacy standards from a Women’s and Gender Studies lens. It’s a big project and we’ve started on it already with the beginnings of a bibliography.
The thing that I am really excited about, though, is that a small section of that committee is going to work on a pilot to allow for virtual participation. (w00t!) This is something I care a lot about, so I’m going to be seriously involved in that. I think it makes a lot of sense for WSS to be interested in this issue because of who we are. Many people can’t come to conferences because they are a caregiver in one way or another, or they do not have the money to attend. For women who are paid less or are caring for children, elderly parents, etc, their gender role keeps them from being as professionally involved as they might like to be. I LOVE that the WSS as a feminist group is doing work in this area; that they might be able to open up conference participation to people who might not go.
Of course, we just discussed beginning this project. As I know more I’ll let you know.
