Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship Meeting I

I attended ALA’s Committee on the Status of Women in Librarianship on Sunday afternoon. We had many things to cover, so this is the lowdown.

1. We’re writing a letter to the ALA board about the representation of women in library publications. There is at least one that shows men in more powerful roles and women in less powerful roles. The imagery should accurately reflect that women can and do work in administrative positions and in technology positions (as well as reflect that men can and do work in caring and nurturing positions).

2. We’d like to propose a project to study ALA publications to see if there are any trends in gender representation.

3. We’re going to submit a resolution to council recommending the formation of a taskforce on women as caregivers. I’ll let you know if this passes.

4. We’re going to co-sponsor WSS’s program: “Feminist Publishing: The Evolution of a Revolution”

5. We’re giving a program at annual on women as caregivers.

6. We’re going to work on keeping the COSWL Cause more active (interestingly there was resistance there…)

7. We’re going to look into more outreach/coalition building both within ALA and outside of it. There are several internal groups not directly related to our mission, but close enough to make sense.

8. We also heard some ALA announcements:

  • the Membership Meeting at Annual will focus on the findings of the eparticipation task force
  • there is a graduated dues task force that found that doing a study about the impact of a graduated dues structure would be too expensive, so they’re going to do a member survey instead
  • there is a draft going around about who can speak for ALA in terms of when two groups within ALA have differing opinions
