the online community

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about about online relationships. For a long time, my online community was pretty much restricted to my blog, the blogs I read, and instant messaging. Then I joined Flickr, and joined a more extended community. Now I’m on Facebook and spend most of the day with Twitter in the sidebar. Once in a while I participate in the Library Society of the World chat. I’m also a big fan of virtual conferences and online meetings. The other day I stumbled across Laura’s post on how grateful she is for these online communities, and I thought “yep, that’s how it is.”

I like these communities because there are some really neat people there. I really like the people I am around in real life, too, but it’s also nice to meet the folks in the long tail: the people agitating for tech and change and 2.0 culture in their own environments. I think it’s fun to meet the people who are doing similar work in different institutions, to learn from their situation and share ideas from what I’m doing. And for those of us who might be a little shy, it’s nice to know a few people that you might run into at conferences or meetings before the event actually happens.

So thanks, gang, for letting me participate, for answering my questions on twitter, and for the scrabulous games!
