Systems approach to assessing information literacy

Assessing Information Literacy: Incorporating a Systems Approach Using Technology

Dr. Lesley Farmer, California State University, Long Beach

Assessment Process: Cyclic

  • observe world around you!
  • define the need for assessment
  • plan assessment process
  • collect data
  • analyze
  • report results
  • plan intervention
  • and it starts over again!

Things to consider when assessing:

  • Staff, money, materials, facility
  • The process (staff and equipment)
  • Services used/products used (what are they using?)
  • Change in user? Impact?
  • The context (university vs. school, etc)

When planning assessment, considers existing standards.

I had to duck out at this point for a staff meeting and class. I’ll do more conference blogging tomorrow!!
