Building the Better Mousetrap: The Information Commons as an Agent of Change (Poster Session)
Lori Critz, Georgia Institute of Technology (speaker)
Bob Fernekes, Georgia Southern University
General Notes:
- Start with aligning the library to the vision/mission statement of the university.
- Realize that outcomes assessments are important.
- Outcome based assessment tie well with library work (ex. Research paper, portfolio, LIBQUAL+, etc)
- Needs assessment, library mission, and institution outcomes
- Library tools for connecting with the Curriculum
- information commons can tie directly to mission statements: focuses on meeting learner needs, develops both information and technology skills for their academic demands, focus on productivity for individuals and groups, open long hours.
- Georgia Tech information commons offers instruction services, assessment, bleeding edge technology, productivity center
- Offers one-on-one point of need assistance for everything, one-hour walk-in classes, and tutorials.
- A presentation studio matches that of the Georgia Tech classrooms so that they can practice in an environment like the ones they’ll be presenting in. They find students will book as groups, and give each other feedback. This sounds like a really neat idea!!
- Information Commons can be paired with other campus groups: peer tutoring, writing center, TA office hours, etc.
