Emerging Technology Committees

Ever since Michael Stephens posted about Emerging Technologies Committees and I started reading about the idea over at LibraryCrunch by Michael Casey, I’ve been interested in the idea.

I really like the idea of everyone in a library potentially having something to add to the technology plan for the library. I really love the idea of soliciting information from patrons about what technologies they use, and then figuring out if there is a way that technology can be useful to connect the patron to the library.

Wayne State’s blog, Think Big-Library 9.95, had a great post on a technology “Show and Share” among their library staff. It looks like a lot of interesting blogging and RSS developments were discussed, and the kind folks at Wayne State were nice enough to post the highlights of the meeting for all of us.

And while we’re on the topic of Emerging Technology Committees, Jenny Levine, The Shifted Librarian has posted about “Developing a Statewide Technology Toolkit.” It’s great. She includes research and development (re: blogging-based, open source software), RSS feeds, Flickr accounts for each library, Instant Messaging for internal and external communication, training on these technologies, usability testing for websites, documentation, and a host of cool things. I really like the emphasis not only on increasing outreach technology, but training the staff and keeping everyone up-to-date.

Other things that an Emerging Technologies Committee might want to consider? How about Library 2.0 Websites: Where to Begin? or the MySpace IM messenger?
