web 2.0

It’s such an exciting time to be in the information business. I know that libraries have gone through major transitions before. I mean, I can’t even imagine what the shift from card catalog to OPAC was like, even though I was alive during that transition.

The excitement, for me, has to do with the increasing demand for library instruction, the potential for libraries to become content creators (in addition to providers), and all things related to Web 2.0.

This great Flickr photo shows the impact that Web 2.0 is having on several different areas. There’s also a fascinating article that goes with the image.

That article introduced me to the idea of Identity 2.0. If you’re like me, and haven’t heard of that before, there’s a great presentation about it on the web.

Not mentioned in the article is the idea of Learning 2.0. This ties into the ambient learning that Bob and I sometimes talk about. Learning 2.0 is something I’ve thought about in the context of Information Literacy instruction. I’m looking forward to seeing what the education community has to say about Learning 2.0.

Speaking of this, Feed my Brain has an awesome reading list. I’ve only read like 3, but I want to read nearly all of them.

What an exciting time to be involved in all of this!

  1. Identity 2.0 is potentially more interesting than Web 2.0 ever will be. That, along with the concepts of Attention and Gestures, will, in my opinion, revolutionize the web if they take hold. I’ve been mentioning these ideas some in my blog, but only superficially. I haven’t yet gotten to the point where I understand how or if they will affect libraries. Dick Hardt, who gave the awesome presentation you point to, was interviewed in the Talking with Talis podcast series. It’s well worth listening to; later in the series, they also talk with Ed Batista, who is involved with Attention Trust.

  2. Thanks for the comment, Travis! I’m going to look into the Hardt/Talking with Talis podcast (as well as all things Identity 2.0). I look forward to checking out your blog for thoughts on Identity 2.0, too.
