online communities

From an article on online communities: “The online world allows you to share only what you want,” said Patty Hanschiegel, founder of StyleDiary.net, an online fashion site with a well-established community. “That identity can be false, or just represent a small portion of you and your life. In the offline world, you don’t always have that luxury.”

Exactly. (Now if only we could get all college students to understand that.)

The article goes on to discuss how identity can be shaped in light of
technology. (This, along with how technology shapes communication,
culture, and the nature of knowledge is among one of my favorite current
topics!)
