Yesterday was rainy.
I got up early enough to take the Riverwalk to the convention center, even though it was pretty dark. It turns out the river crosses Navarro in a few places, so I was going the wrong way. Luckily I figured it out in time to catch the shuttle downtown in time.
I sat in on the Top Tech Trends discussion. I actually blogged about it for LITA, so when that link is ready I’ll add it here. It was really interesting in several ways for me. Not only were several “rock stars†there, but also the discussion delved into some really interesting topics. I heard some interesting different perspectives on user information seeking education and some thoughts about the changing nature of culture and expert. Good stuff.
Next I trekked to the Instruction Committee meeting of the Women’s Studies Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries. We have a big agenda and one of the first things to get done is to set up a blog. My task is to look into blogging software that allows for privacy control. It’ll probably be the first task I do once I get home.
I went to the ARL Leadership Symposium again, and heard three presentations. The first was Preparing for Your Job Search: Networking & Negotiation Skills by Jolie Ogg Graybill and Teresa Miguel. I also heard Library Instruction: Practical Advice for New Librarians by Portia Diaz. Finally, I heard Dr. Teresa Neely’s Should I Consider a PhD, which gave me a lot to think about.
On the way back to the hotel, I checked out the Alamo. It’s surprisingly small! I need to do a little more reading on its history as soon as I get home.
I went back to my room, trying to decide what to do, and finally went out for coffee. I had a fun time at Starbucks. The two baristas were friendly and interested in chatting with someone from the conference with a few earrings. They also were interested in information literacy. I didn’t plan on going there, so I didn’t take a notebook. I felt so at home, I wound up writing on napkins and staying for a while. The walk home was a little bit creepy. We’re about a 20 minute walk up the Riverwalk.
