information literacy 2.0?

I’ve been thinking more and more lately about Library 2.0, information literacy, and what we should be doing to reach our students. I’ve also been monitoring my RSS feeds to see what’s being said in these areas. I read a lot about Library 2.0, a lot about information literacy, but not a lot dealing with the intersection of the two. For this reason, I think I’m going to work to move this blog to deal with this area.

I plan to think on this over the next few days (I’ll be without internet until Wednesday or Thursday). I want to consider how we can meet users where they are (flickr, last.fm, del.icio.us, etc)? How can we create ambient learning opportunities in those arenas?

I also see information literacy as evolving to include how to select the best resources to keep current in your area. Those who monitor RSS feeds, discussion lists, and other virtual communities know that there are lots of valuable sources that can consume a lot of time that could be spent doing things. It’s important to be able to evaluate which communities are most valuable and how to determine the type of attention to pay to these services.

The terms I’m throwing around in my mind are things like “ambient learning,” “mobile learning,” “ambient findability,” “social software,” “remix culture,” and “knowledge creation vs. information consumption.”

As I mentioned earlier, I’m out for a few days. Have a happy holiday!
